Emma – A Pop Musical
“Emma – A Pop” Musical is directed by Mr. Bowley, cast by the CCI student in the musical.
I interviewed Mr. Bowley and here are the conversations below:
Q: What is this musical about? What story does this musical tell?
A: There is a very good description of the musical on the PLAYSCRIPTS website.
Emma, a senior at Highbury Prep, is certain she knows what’s best for her classmates’ love lives, and is determined to find the perfect boyfriend for shy sophomore Harriet by the end of the school year. But will Emma’s relentless matchmaking get in the way of finding her own happiness? Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, this sparkling new musical features the hit songs of legendary girl groups and iconic female singers from The Supremes to Katy Perry. Girl power has never sounded so good!
Q: How do you feel about this musical?
A: At first, I was unsure about the plot being taken from a 19th-century novel, but when I read the script I was pleasantly surprised at how well it suited a high school setting and the social context of the teenage lifestyle. It has so much potential and it’s quite new so there was a bit of a challenge creating the show for the first time. Oftentimes a musical that has been done a few times has a basic outline (as far as scene blocking and song choreography that allows you to scrutinize and make decisions about how you want to put your own creative spin on the project. Your own creative vision, shows how you will make it unique. This show was a challenge for that.
Q: What’s your favorite part(s) and song(s) in this musical?
A: That’s a hard question. I like the scene in the hallway where Emma is signing up for a project on the bulletin board and Jeff Knightly is talking to her. He’s really getting under her skin with some questions about her integrity and then she sees Frankie Churchill, which totally changes her emotion and the scene takes a different direction as Jeff is basically ignored.
Q: How’s the musical turned out? How did audiences respond?
A: The production was a great success. People really like the characters and the music is so fun and everyone knows the songs. The students did a fantastic job of creating the characters and the energy is very high. I’m so happy we chose this musical.
